Graduate Teaching Assistantships

GTAs assist with the teaching of undergraduate courses at Western. In September 2013, a graduate student with a full one-term GTAship will receive a base salary of $4,550 plus a one-time payment as provided in Article 18.02 of the Collective Agreement. Employment of registered graduate students as graduate teaching assistants is governed by the provisions of The Collective Agreement between The University of Western Ontario and the Public Service Alliance of Canada, which can be found at Human Resources.

Medical Sciences

Position Description:

This position is open to all graduate students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Medical Science 4200F/G is an interdisciplinary lecture course for 4th year students in the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences. Course content focuses on the role of inflammation in disease. This course is set-up as a "flipped classroom" with students completing interactive online learning modules prior to coming to class. Students will spend class time working on case studies, patient profiles, literature critique and group projects. The appointee will be responsible for marking assignments, attending class and proctoring exams as required from September 2013 to December 2013 for the fall term, and from January 2014 to April 2014 for the winter term. Classes are on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-2:30 for both the fall and winter terms.

Medical Sciences

Position Description:

Teaching Assistant positions available for Medical Sciences 4900F/G for both fall and winter semesters.

These positions are open to all graduate students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. Medical Science 4900F/G is an advanced lab course for 4th year students in the Honors Specialization in Medical Sciences. This course will involve animal work and lab experiments such as RNA isolation, real time PCR, histology, medical imaging, and biochemical assays. Experience in these areas is an asset, as well as previous work with rodents (rat experience is preferred). Positions are required from September 2013 to December 2013 for the fall term, and from January 2014 to April 2014 for the winter term. Classes are on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday afternoons for both the fall and winter terms.  Labs run between 3 and 4 hours per day. The appointee will be responsible for familiarity with all lab material, helping students with all aspects of the lab and some marking.

Position Description:
Graduate Teaching Assistant positions available in the Department of Biology In compliance with the existing provisions of the Collective Agreement between the University and the UWO-GTA Union, PSAC Local 610, the Department of Biology would like to inform qualified graduate students that following teaching assistantship positions are available in the department for the fall term. Those Ph.D. graduate students who are currently just beyond their normal TA eligibility period are welcome to apply. Graduate students in the Biology programs will be given preference.
?    Biology 1001A/1002B General BiologyTutorials ( 10 hours per week) Responsibilities will include teaching, marking assignments and record keeping. Applicants should have experience teaching and be knowledgeable in the fields of genetics, physiology, ecology and evolution.
?    Biology 1001A/1002B General Biology Laboratory (10 hours per week) Responsibilities will include pre-lab talks, marking assignments and record keeping. Applicants should have experience teaching and be knowledgeable in the fields of genetics, physiology, ecology and evolution. Knowledge of safety in the laboratory is a must.
?    Biology 1001A/1002B General Biology Lecture TA(10 hours per week) Responsibilities include supporting  active learning in lectures, assisting instructors with technical set-up and classroom management, answering student questions on an online "backchannel", preparing pre-lecture online quizzes, administering clicker records, evaluating active learning strategies, simulations etc.   Familiarity with First Year Biology content and comfort with online communication, OWL and Excel will be assets.
