Based on a new initiative launched in July 2025, Western University is proud to introduce the US-CAN Doctoral Excellence Award, a targeted effort to support doctoral students impacted by the recent changes in higher education in the United States. This initiative offers a unique opportunity for high-achieving students to pursue their research ambitions in a globally recognized, supportive, and inclusive academic environment in Canada.

Value

  • Up to $160,000 (CAD) ($40,000 per year) for up to four years of study in a research-based doctoral program.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Be studying at, have received an offer from, or have had an offer rescinded by a doctoral program at an American university ranked on the Top 100 QS Top Universities or the Top 100 Times Higher Education (THE) lists.
  • Meet the admission requirements of the intended research-based doctoral program at Western University.
  • Be of any nationality.

  • receive generous financial support to cover tuition and living expenses.

How To Apply

  • Applicants must submit this preliminary application form for intial assessment.
  • Once applicants have their preliminary application form assessed, they will be sent a link where they can apply for admission to their preferred doctoral program.

Timeline and Deadlines

Applications will be reviewed and assessed on a rolling basis throughout the year. Applicants have the flexibility to start their doctoral program in one of three terms:

  • Fall Term:  September 1, 2025
  • Winter Term:  January 1, 2026
  • Summer Term:  May 1, 2026
